The current demand for wood from first thinning is mainly in two areas
-
Wood for sawing and stake production i.e boxwood and stakes

Boxwood is predominantly 3.1 meters in length, straight with a minimum small end diameter of 14 centimeters. The sawn products are mainly pallet boards and fencing components that are directed to the home and export markets.Stake wood dimension are usually 1.6 meters (5ft) or 1.9 meters (6ft.) in length with a diameter of 13 centimeters. Stake wood when processed and treated is solely directed to the Irish agricultural and forestry fencing market.

Pulpwood or fuel wood
This category is the material that is not suitable for any of the above for quality or diameter reasons and needs to be removed from the forest effect the correct thinning (remove the poorer quality trees). The dimensions of this material are approximately as follows as it does not have to be as exact as above, 3.0 meters in length with few other limitations.
The current outlets for this material are the particle board producing mills (Medite, Clonmel and Smartply, Waterford) and the fuel wood market that is new but increasing annually, there are many of these outlets countrywide and increasing.
