There is no annual fee for being a member of Forwood Forestry Ltd as the company organises the management of the crop on a commission of the net profit from timber sales from first thinning to clearfell. This ensures the objectives of the owner and Forwood Forestry Ltd are aligned as regards correct management of the crop combined with maximising returns from the final harvest of the crop as quickly as possible. This ensures transparency for the owner from first thinning right through to clearfell. Timber removal is controlled through the forest docket system, which is the recognised system in Ireland.
The owner remains in 100% in control of the forest whilst Forwood Forestry Ltd is not the purchaser of the timber. This is an essential point for the owner.
This system facilitates the clustering of both large and small plantations for thinning which reduces harvesting and extraction costs for owners. The company provide finance to complete harvesting and delivery of the raw material ensuring an owner has to provide no working capital. It also enables the company to plan harvesting and management over the long term which combats the difficulties involved in managing fragmented forest holdings.
Of significant benefit to owners is the price premium, which will be achieved through the group selling of logs. Sawmill purchasers prefer to purchase large quantities from a single source rather than small quantities from individual growers, which adds considerable administrative costs.
The company manage the diverse and fragmented forest holdings by means of a computerised management tool combining both a database of clients and GIS software to facilitate clustering of forests for thinning. All mapping is done using GPS, which allows accurate measurement of areas to be thinned, and projected volumes for removal from thinning and clear fell.
Given the maturing age profile of the private forest estate, the company intends to develop the business to manage a minimum of 20,000 hectares within the next five years. To achieve this, the company has recently employed an additional forester working full time on organizing the thinning of privately owned forests.
